Before he became a patient,he was simply Jackson.
Jackson Christopher Wangare grew up in Kenya. The photographs his family kept from those years show an ordinary childhood — birthdays, new shoes, days at the coast.
He was a child when the accident happened, and he has spent most of his life since then adapting to what it left behind. That history is a large part of his story, but it is not the whole of it.
What follows is drawn from Jackson's medical records. We have tried to tell it plainly, because he deserves to be understood rather than pitied.

Before
An ordinary childhood
Jackson was a young boy living in Kenya, in good health.

The road traffic accident
Jackson was involved in a road traffic accident and admitted to hospital with a serious head injury.
After the accident
Intensive care
He was managed in intensive care and then on the children's ward. Imaging showed bleeding on the brain and diffuse injury to the nerve fibres that carry movement signals.
During recovery
Learning to move again
Jackson left hospital later that year and began rehabilitation, relearning how to stand and walk with the support of a walking frame.
Over the years
Tremors that did not settle
Speech and movement improved to a point and then stopped improving. The tremors in his limbs persisted, despite continued medical management.
Today
Living with severe tremors
Eighteen years on, Jackson lives with rubral tremors, difficulty walking, unclear speech and a history of falls.

Reaching for a small object and guiding it into place takes sustained effort, and his hands do not stay still.
Sitting and shifting position
Even changing position on a sofa involves involuntary movement he cannot settle.
Staying steady
His medical records note walking difficulty and a history of falls, alongside speech that is not clear.

Deep Brain Stimulation uses an implanted medical device to deliver controlled electrical stimulation to carefully selected areas involved in movement.
